What should my career be?

What Should My Career Be?

When it comes to answering what should my career be, we have to look at the relationship between first career choice and changing career. According to a survey of New York professionals every person wanted to change their careers three times in their lives. The NY Times also discusses the idea of retuning your career. Many people seem confused and can’t figure out the best career. They seem to be asking themselves and others, too “what should my career be”. They need guidance and this post for the people who are looking for the answers to “what career is right for me”. It is also a good idea to look at career aspirations.

What Should My Career Be

What Career Should I Pursue?

The first step everyone should take to find out the best career for them is to figure out what they are good at. People get admissions in engineering, medical professions but when they graduate, they want to change their careers. The governments and especially the colleges must introduce systems that help students find their passion and a profession that excites them.

The next step is to try some online tests that help shape careers of the individuals. These tests are meant to find out what career is right for me and what should my career be. This will surely be a great source of help for the confused guys.

Trying a mentor will also be an effective way to find out what career you should pursue. Meet people of your interest and find out what motivated them. Listen to them, learn from them and if they suggest you to consult someone- make them your mentor.

What Career Should I have?

Once you are done with mentoring and finding your strengths, the next step should be to pursue it. What you pursue today should be your career for a lifetime. Students and the unemployed individuals must remember switching your profession is not a piece of cake. It will be an ugly decision in case the new profession doesn’t seem to be your cup of tea.

And don’t listen to others. Complete your research work on career selection and go with it. People will suggest a lot of things but everyone doesn’t need to be listened and asked. Do what your heart says. Do things that excite and keep you happy. I have seen qualified professionals desiring to change professions because they are not happy at all while there are people who graduated and started working in different professions than their parent degree and they are quite happy.

Bonus Tip

Another handy piece of advice is to switch the profession. Today, we see technology sector growing rapidly and more people are switching their professions to tech sector. They either become social media manager, SEO experts, bloggers and many other experts. In case you want to switch your profession, do it wisely. Do the necessary research; equip yourself with new and in-demand set of skills before landing a new job.  And this all is subjected to hard work, dedication and passionate efforts. Last but not the least, your career is with you, but you are not married to your career, so make decisions that have a future.  If you invest today in your strengths, you will have gigantic sets of skills in the future and this is what makes anyone successful. The bottom line is you need to be clear and answer for yourself what should my career be and don’t rely too much on what other people say about you.

Career Aspirations and Examples

Career Aspirations

Career aspirations are a set of directions you want your career to go. You will find some good explanations on answer.com. Keep in mind, career aspirations are a little different than career goals. Goals are measurable and you will know when you achieve them. Career aspirations are a little vague but they can be as bold as your imagination allows. When you think you have reached an aspiration, you still have room to go higher.

You can set multiple goals that keep you on the aspiration path. With each achievement, you will get closer to your aspirations. Here is where you can learn more about setting goals and achieving success.

Career aspirations are different for each person. There is no right or wrong to what each person want to achieve in life. The key is to have a good understanding of what we want out of our career. For some people it is to satisfy their ego, I have achieved this level of success. For some it is about finding a good balance between life and work by being in the career they love that gives them flexibility. There are others who set their career aspirations based on their need for security.

Career Aspirations

Let’s look at a few examples of career aspirations

Join Management

Some people want to have more responsibility, lead others, or gain more power. They invest their time and energy learning the ins and outs of the organization and acquire skills to manage people. They are constantly working on achieving a management role. There is an ongoing aspiration where the management role grows from managing a few people to managing the whole organization. The aspiration does not change but increases in magnitude. Sometimes, it is possible to reach a level and decide this is not what I thought it would be like. At this time, we can reevaluate and decide where to go next. Stepping down a level might be a good idea, at times, if we are also trying to find balance between the achievement and other parts of our lives.

Subject Matter Expert

Some people want to gain deep knowledge in one area, become a subject matter expert. Once they reach this level, they can use the expertise to be an independent consultant helping big or small organizations with their specific needs. Another option is to be an expert in a specific work in an organization and be responsible for all aspects of that part of the business. A good example is a tax account who is also a CPA. This person can work for small or large organizations and be responsible for all tax related account work. They may also choose to be an independent person doing freelance work.

Own a Business

Owning a business is a dream for many people. Some want it because it will afford them a no boss work environment, be their own boss, and have the freedom to take a break at will. They also see the earning potential and decide this is the path they want to take. When it comes to being our own boss, it might appear that we are reporting to no one and that we can do whatever we want with no accountability. However, the clients we serve become our boss. Without them, the business does not strive. Without their approval, the business does not grow. So this is something to keep in mind as we think about owning a business. There has to be enough compelling reason beyond the employee boss relationship.

Choosing A Career You Love

Choosing a Career

Choosing a career is an important part of growing up. This is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your lifetime. It takes some deep thinking, soul searching and analysis and it does not come out of the blue.  Choosing a career is the sum of all your dreams, passion, skills, talents, and abilities. You should put time and effort to figure out the right career for you. You should be able to say I am willing to do this even if I am not getting paid for it; possibly turn your hobby into a career.

How do you go about choosing a career? For some, it is an easy process and a breeze. It’s a lifelong dream that stays with them all the time.  Others, however, struggle with figuring out what they want to do when they grow up. This could be a problem as they age since they are still trying to grow up but the biological clock keeps ticking. This is where a lot of people give up. It is best to tackle this issue as soon as possible in early adulthood. For those that are still struggling, I offer some FREE help, just click here to learn more.  There are lost souls everywhere in the world who labor away at jobs they don’t like just because they need to make ends meet. It might be OK for some as they turn a job they don’t like into a career. However, this does not have to be the case if someone really wants to be in charge of their career choice.

Choosing a Career

If you are not sure on the process to choosing a career path, I highly recommend you start listing all the things you like to do the most, basically, what is your passion? Are you a whiz at games? You could become a game developer or a game tester.  Maybe you’ve always been able to fix your family cars without any formal training. Then a certified mechanic might be in your future. Do you love cooking and entertaining people without any stress. A chef or a restaurant manager could be a possibility. The options are endless and opportunities limitless. Go out and find the right career without fear.

After you list the possible career options, it is a good idea to research what the job market has to offer in your passion areas. It will not do you any good to hone in on a career that has no demand. I am not trying to discourage you but actually encourage you to creatively work possible jobs into your passion area. In addition, check out all jobs available in your area. Could there be some that you did not think about but could fit your personality very well? Let’s look at the earlier example of entertaining people. Is it entertaining you enjoy or taking care of people and seeing them happier? Maybe a career in the medical field is what is right for you. As you can see again, options are always in abundance. Are you good at making friends? There are almost always a huge demand for salespeople. People who are good at convincing, negotiating and communicating can go for these jobs that require very little formal training.

One part of choosing a career is looking at both physically and mentally capabilities. If you dislike working with numbers, the financial world is not for you no matter how much earning potential it offers. Why do something that will make you miserable? It is not to say you can’t learn to like something new but if your dislike is so big why not go after something more in your alley.  For example, if you’ve always been good at giving your siblings a massage, consider massage therapy or physical therapy career choices.

There are many career aptitude tests available to help you with the process. Here is one example from Time.

Choosing a career is a big and important decision. Take your time to do it right and don’t forget to add excitement to your research and inner discovery.  The best is always to come and be ready to start a new phase of your life without any fear of failure.
